A trip to Nicosia

Steve and I took a trip up to Nicosia, while we were there we took the opportunity to cross the recently opened border post at Ledra street which leads into the Turkish part of Northern Cyprus. We visited the Great Inn (Buyuk Han) which has been impressively renovated.

We also visited the central bazaar and the Main mosque.

A Cypriot Wedding

A huge wedding took place in the village, and a couple of hundred guests turned up to celebrate and as is tradition, the bride and groom stood for a couple of hours to greet each guest.

On a sad note, one of the first people we ever met when we arrived in Pissouri passed away this week, Chris was a very friendly and warm man and we often listened with interest when he told us of his life in Cyprus.

Chris spent 38 years working for the British Administration on the Base at Episkopi as a sign-writer.

Alun's 50th Birthday

There was a good turnout of friends at the 1911 club to celebrate Alun’s 50th birthday. Among the gifts and birthday cards was a homemade “moon” card, made from a delicate photograph take at Rob’s birthday dinner.

Welcome to the Over 50 club.

Easter in Cyprus

The Cypriot Easter weekend began with a Procession of religious icons through the streets of the village, this was followed by a midnight firework display at the village church.

On Easter Sunday the village square was packed with people for the Easter games and traditional music and dancing.

A "You tube" video of Dancing in the Village square

Taking a break from the festivities we popped down the 1911 club to watch Cardiff Blues rugby club demolish Gloucester by 50 points to 12 in the final of the EDF cup

We then went to a midnight fireworks display in the heart of the village, at 2.00am we were kindly invited into Theo's house for a Traditional Easter meal with all of his family.

The following day, the annual football tournament took place on the new pitch when the married men played against the single men of the village.

Pissouri Branch of CCSC

The Pissouri branch of the Cardiff City supporters club (2 members) gathered at Paul’s house to watch the final derby game against Swansea to be played at Ninian Park. An eventful game ended up as a 2-2 draw.

Pat and Derek arrive in Cyprus

Pat and Derek took a break from their holiday in Paphos to visit Pissouri.
The visit coincided with Derek’s birthday, so we organised a dinner for him at Kyrena beach restaurant.

After the dinner the guests trouped back to the 1911 club to toast the birthday boy.
