2014 Thessaloniki - Greece

We decided to take a short break to the Greek city of Thessaloniki, the flight from Cyprus took 1hr 40mins. Our base for our visit was The Avra hotel which is situated in the coastal town of Perea. The area had been hit by a storm two days before we arrived and the shoreline was covered in debris.

We took a stroll along the seafront stopping off for the occasional drink. We ended up at "The Myth"  restaurant where we received a warm welcome, we enjoyed a meal of hake and finished off sharing a drink of raki flavoured with honey and cinnamon.

The following day we took the local bus from Perea into the City, our first stop was the impressive water front that that overlooks the Thermaic Gulf. The waterfront has a number of statues both classical and modern.  The largest statue is that of Alexander the Great on his trusty steed, Bucephalus.

The next stop was the famous White tower which an iconic monument of the city. The White tower is was a former prison and place of execution. We the hopped aboard the "History of Thessaloniki"  bus that gives you a snapshot of the historical monuments which have created the City's history.

We hopped off the bus at Ano Poli (Upper town) and explored the Byzantine fortification walls which were constructed in the 4th century.   We then had lunch at a small taverna where a cheerful cook grilled lamb and chicken in front of us as we enjoyed a well earned beer.

That night a storm blew into the Perea area with quite heavy rain and winds, this morning it is still quite breezy but we wrapped up well and took a long walk along the sea front to the fishing shelter.

On a beautiful late Summer's day made our way back into Thessaloniki, our first stop was the bustling area of Aristotelous square with its impressive buildings,  various street vendors and locals feeding the carefree pigeons.  We then made our way down to the old shipping terminal that now houses cafes, museums and art galleries.

We then walked along the busy seafront and boarded one of the pleasure boats that takes visitors out into the harbour. We then watched the local kids put on an energetic Karate display. All to quickly it was time to pack up and head home to Cyprus after a wonderful visit to the city of Thessaloniki.
