The "Firebirds" in Pissouri.

The Firebirds brought their own unique brand of 50's Rock and Roll to the Pissouri amphitheater with The "Great balls of fire " show.

Chris King and the band turned back the clock to the 1950's and the birth of the Rock and Roll era.

     

   

Scrub Fires

As the temps rise here in Cyprus, so does the risk of scrub fires and today one started in the valley below the village of Pissouri. Thankfully the Fire helicopters were quick to respond and soon had the fire under control.

New Smoothies in The Bay and 50,000 hits on this little Blog

Karin and Mark have opened  "Smoothie & Sweetie" which is a new cafe in Pissouri bay dedicated to Smoothies, frozen yogurt and a host of tasty cakes, waffles and pastries. They offer a warm welcome to their cafe and we wish them all the best in their venture.

A Swedish fishing trip and Famous Footballers in Cyprus

Robin and Johan had a successful fishing trip near the town of Gavle, in Sweden.

Local girl, Megan, meeting one of her heroes. Manchester United and International football, Rio Ferdinand at Aphrodite Hills golf complex near Pissouri.

After playing against Rio's lads he complimented her tackling and control.

Problems with our Village Council

Our Village  has had problems with certain members of the village council for the last couple of years and today it came to a bit of a head when local residents protested at a council meeting.

PISSOURI council is at breaking point and unable to lawfully carry out decision making, local businesses and officials say.
And the situation has come to such a head that an official from the Limassol District Office will today visit the village to try to get to the bottom of things.
Secretary of the community board Petros Foutas said some of the councilors don’t turn up to meetings, and won’t discuss ongoing projects so there is a stagnation and inactivity. “Nothing is working,” he said.
“The district administration has the power as they are ‘above us’,” Foutas said. “The law says that if a council cannot carry out its tasks then the minister of the interior grants the power to the local administration to help to make decisions.”
“There are nine members of the local council and five are totally against the muktah. In the short time since they have been elected, they have ruined the village and so we have decided to hold a silent protest to highlight the problems and show our support for the muktah,” villager Roger Haston, 65, said.
Local businesses and residents will stage a peaceful protest today against the alleged unlawful behaviour of the five members of the local council, during the district officer’s visit at 10am.
“We want as many people as possible to join our peaceful protest. We will hopefully be able to get access to the council meeting for two members of the public; we want to know why they (the five) won’t agree to look after our village,” Haston said.
One of the victims of the impasse is the once busy traditional Cyprus night held once a week from May to August in the village square, attracting up to 1,000 visitors at a time. For the past year, the council has been unable to issue a licence for this.
And, according to locals, weeds are growing everywhere while there are some roads that are so overgrown that they are down to a single track.
“Volunteers are cleaning up the village square and the beaches. I believe the council is not even able to issue cheques to staff for payments,” Haston said.
“We need to move things on to a more prosperous and better time. These people don’t follow the rules; they shout and scream, they think because there are five of them they can do what they want. But nobody is above the law,” Foutas concluded.

Jon's 40th Birthday

To celebrate his Birthday, Jon turned into "Jona Kebab" as he turned his hand at cooking a tradition Chicken kebab. The result was a truly delicious meal.

The birthday cake was based on the Angry birds internet game.

The Red Arrows and a Top notch Curry

The R.A.F display team, The Red Arrows,  went through their impressive training programme over Pissouri Bay and we were lucky to watch them from our terrace.

Spring Weather on the Sunshine Island

After a bright start and unseasonably warm weather with temps reaching 32 degrees in early May we are now halfway through the Month  and all this week we have had Thunderstorms, torrential rain and strong winds.

As the Thunderstorms broke around us, Mandy produced a superb Oxtail Casserole for dinner.

Easter in Cyprus

On Easter Sunday we made our way over to the Olympus Restaurant for a traditional meal of souvla (bbq.) We then wandered down to the village square to watch the celebrations.

               

The usual fun and games entertained the crowd and one particular local spilt blood to get across the finishing line first in a competitive sack race.

Meanwhile, back in our Old home City of Cardiff (UK) a parade through the streets was held for the local football team who had won this year's Championship. The parade ended up at Cardiff Bay with live music, fireworks and the presentation of the Trophy.

St George's Day 2013

We  spent Sunday afternoon at the Pine bay club -Pissouri, where they held a dinner  to Mark St George's day  (Patron Saint of England.) There was a live singer, Morris dancers and all manner of high jinx to celebrate Old St George's memory.

Celebrating the League Championship.

We made our way over to Pafos in the hope of Watching Cardiff City win the Championship, our first stop was Christos Taverna for a lovely lunch overlooking the Bay.










We then moved onto The New Horizon to watch Cardiff clinch the Championship against Burnley. We then returned to Pissouri to mark this historical event...its been 53 Years since The Bluebirds soared this high, it was worth celebrating.

Cardiff City Promotion

Just a quick mention of our old(UK) football team, Cardiff City, who after 51 years of trying, finally gained promotion from the Championship.










The Bluebirds gained the point they needed in front of a sell out crowd against Charlton Athletic, at the final whistle a jubilant crowd invaded the pitch to celebrate joining the top league of British football, The Premiership.

Now the Club have a chance of winning the Championship in the last three games of the season.
