2. Sea Day

The following day was a sea day, and the Marella Discovery continued her journey eastwards through the calm waters of the Mediterranean. With the weather on our side, we took the opportunity to enjoy a brisk walk around the top deck, completing several laps to help walk off our breakfast. It was a lovely, relaxing start to the day, with plenty of fresh sea air and sunshine.

However, our peaceful morning was soon interrupted by an unexpected announcement from the Captain over the ship’s PA system. A passenger had become seriously ill, and the ship would be diverting towards the island of Rhodes to rendezvous with an emergency helicopter.

The atmosphere on board suddenly changed as preparations began for the medical evacuation. Sections of the upper deck were cleared of sunbeds, passengers and anything else that might be caught in the powerful downdraft from the helicopter’s rotor blades. It was quite a sight to see the crew organising everything so efficiently, ensuring that the area was safe and ready for the operation.

As the helicopter approached, it became clear that it would not be able to land on the ship. Instead, the medical team carried out a winch operation, lowering a rescuer to the vessel before the seriously ill passenger was airlifted from the ship.

The Hellenic Air Force Super Puma helicopter successfully airlifted a passenger and their companion from the Marella Discovery cruise ship.

Our thoughts were with the passenger as the ship continued its journey, and we hoped that they would receive the urgent medical attention they needed.

That evening, we headed to the Atrium Bar for a pre-dinner drink, where we enjoyed watching the Captain introduce his team of senior officers. It was an opportunity to meet the faces behind the smooth running of the ship and added a touch of occasion to the evening.

Afterwards, we made our way to the 47° Restaurant, where we settled in for a lovely dinner. The food was excellent, and the service was exceptional, making it a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience.

All in all, it was a wonderful way to round off another memorable day aboard the Marella Discovery.
