15. Cancelled Ports

The Captain warned us the night before: strong winds were on their way. He wasn’t exaggerating. Through the night the ship was well and truly buffeted, the kind of rolling and rattling that reminds you who’s really in charge out there. Sleep came in patches as the sea made its presence known.
Still, cruise life carries on.

That evening we headed to the Princess Theater for “Bravo”, a high-energy tribute to hit musicals. It was superbly produced — powerful vocals, slick choreography, and all the big numbers you secretly hope they’ll perform. For a while, we forgot about the wind howling outside and were swept up in West End and Broadway magic. A proper show in every sense of the word.

By morning, Rob was up early and out on deck as we approached Kochi. It was bracing — bitterly cold with strong gusts whipping across the decks — but there’s something about sailing into a new port that’s worth a few numb fingers.

Then came the announcement.

Due to the high winds, it was unsafe to dock. We would not be stopping in Kochi or the next port, Toba, after all.
There’s always a flicker of disappointment when a port call is cancelled. But travel — especially by sea — is a reminder that plans are suggestions, not guarantees. Safety comes first, and the ocean always has the final say.
We spent the morning in the Explorer's lounge taking part in quizzes and a "Hole in one" golf tournament.
