2014 New York City -USA

On a a cold January morning We flew from Heathrow, London to JFK New York City.
We had arrive in the City to be met by tail end of a very cold weather sysytem.

Day 2.
On a bitterly cold day  our second day in the City began when  we jumped on the Subway and made our way down to South Manhatten to join the Staten Island Ferry. As the Ferry made its way through the ice on the harbour we enjoyed views of the Statue of Liberty and the famous city skyline.

We then then made our way over to the impressive Grand central station. In the evening we made our way over to O'Brien's pub for a bite to eat and to meet a few of the locals.

Day 3.
First order of the day was a trip over to Rockafella Plaza, it was too misty to go upto the Top of the rocks but we enjoyed the skaters and the superb surrounding area. From Rockafella Plaza we made our way over to the Brooklyn bridge which is one of the most famous landmarks in the City.

The area around the bridge has some absolutely beautiful old buildings and its a joy just to walk the streets and enjoy the surrounding area.
Our final stop of the day was Chelsea Market where the locals go for their fresh meat, fish and veg.

Day 4.
We took the tour and visited the museum of the 9/11 tragedy, our guide, Ray, was actually inside one of the World Trade towers when the first plane hit it. Ray gave a very moving and informative talk during the tour.
Amid very tight security we our way to the memorial park where 2 large waterfalls stand on the site of the Twin Towers with the names of the victims inscribed in the surrounding walls. The area is now being rebuilt with The Freedom tower being the first building to be completed.

Ray also told us about O'Hara's pub which somehow survived the devastation and which was used as a field hospital and is now a preserved memorial itself. Ray said that if we had time that we should pop in and raise a glass to all the members of the emergency services who acted so bravely on that terrible day.....and so we did.

Day 5.
On our final morning in New York City we took a stroll around the Columbus circle and Central Park area, but the wind was so cold that we had to seek shelter and a hot coffee. We then headed over to New Jersey to begin the second part of Mandy's surprise birthday vacation.
