A Trip to the Greek Island of Zakynthos 2004

We took a trip to the Greek Island of Zakynthos.  Our base was in the small resort of Kalamaki beach. we had the pleasure of exploring Kalamaki Beach, a stunning gem on the southern coast of Zakynthos, Greece.

This charming town is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and the gentle lull of the Mediterranean breeze. As we strolled along the coastline, the soft golden sands stretched out before us, inviting us to relax and soak up the sun.

We embarked on an unforgettable boat trip to Navagio Beach, one of the most iconic destinations in Zakynthos. As we set sail, the excitement was palpable, with the sun shining brightly overhead and the azure waters of the Ionian Sea stretching out before us. The boat bobbed gently along the waves, and we could hardly contain our anticipation as we approached our destination.
We took a boat trip out to Navagio beach, which is also known a shipwreck beach.

It is  unsure when the MV Panayiotis washed ashore, sometime in the early 1989's  and its believed that the ship was used by smugglers. Whatever the reason, it makes for a striking scene.

We wandered along the beach, marveling at the stark beauty surrounding us. The towering cliffs loomed above, while the clear water lapped at our feet. We couldn't resist taking a dip in the crystal-clear sea, the cool water refreshing against the warm sun. The beach felt almost surreal, like a postcard come to life, and we took countless photos to capture the moment.

Michaelo's Tavern was was of our favourite place to eat, a family run Taverna

We decided to hire a car and explore the Island. We found some wonderful secluded coves to relax and swim in the crystal clear water.

Our first stop was the iconic Navagio Beach, famously known as Shipwreck Beach. The drive to this breathtaking cove was a winding journey through lush greenery, with panoramic views of the sparkling turquoise sea. Upon arrival, the sight of the shipwreck resting on the pristine white sands was nothing short of mesmerizing. We spent hours soaking in the beauty of the secluded bay, capturing photos and enjoying the serene atmosphere.

As we continued our exploration, we meandered through quaint villages, each with its own character. We discovered the charming streets of Volimes, where local artisans showcased their crafts. The warmth of the people and the tantalizing aromas from traditional tavernas beckoned us to stop for a delightful lunch of fresh seafood and local delicacies.

Driving along the coastal roads, we ventured to the picturesque town of Zante, where we strolled through vibrant markets and admired the historic architecture. The lively atmosphere was contagious, and we couldn't resist sampling some of the local wines while enjoying the stunning views of the harbor.

While we were in Zakynthos the European Football Championships were taking place and Underdog, Greece reached the final where they played Portugal. We went along to a local Taverna to watch the match.

As the match progressed, the energy in the taverna became electric. Laughter and cheers erupted as Greece scored its decisive goals, creating a symphony of clinking glasses and jubilant shouts. The patrons, many dressed in blue and white jerseys, raised their glasses of ouzo and local wine in raucous toasts, celebrating each moment of glory. The owner, a jovial man with a twinkle in his eye, brought out plates of moussaka and tzatziki, offering a taste of Greece that complemented the excitement of the night.

...and low and behold the Greek team caused a major upset by winning the Final 1-0.

At the Final whistle the Taverna exploded in to joyous scence of celebration and we never bought a dink for the rest of the night.

As Greece clinched victory, the taverna erupted in joyous chaos. People hugged, danced, and sang, embodying the heart and soul of Greece. It was a moment of pride, a shared experience that turned the small taverna into a hub of celebration, reminding us of the power of sport to bring people together. The warmth of the night, combined with the magic of the moment, made our time in Kalamaki Beach a cherished memory we would carry forever.
