Alghero to Rome to Cyprus

We hopped on the local airport bus, a bargain at 1.30 euro and took the short ride to Alghero airport.

We boarded the Airitalia fight for the 45 minute journey over to Rome's FCO airport.

After a long connection wait at Rome's Fiumicino we boarded the flight to Paphos which took 2 and a half hours.

So that concludes our visit to The Island of Sardinia. We both agreed that the welcome and help from the Sardinians we met was second to none.
We also noticed that they were proud of their Island and kept it spotlessly clean.

Alghero to Fertilia

On our final day in Alghero we decided to catch the local bus over to the small village of Fertilia. The journey only took about 20 minutes.

Fertilia is a small coastal town in northwest Sardinia, near Alghero. Built in the 1930s during Italy's Fascist era, it features rationalist architecture and a unique history tied to land reclamation projects.

We strolled down to the marina that has sweeping views over the bay to Alghero.

We stopped off for a coffee and pastry close to the village square before heading over to the  Calich Lagoon. The lagoon is part of the Porto Conte Regional Natural Park.

Adjacent to the lagoon are the remnants of the Ponte Romano di Fertilia, an ancient Roman bridge that once featured 24 arches, of which 13 remain today.

Walking back to the main Piazza we came across the Alguer rugby club at San Marco field.

The club is a newly established rugby union club based in Fertilia, a district of Alghero in northwest Sardinia, Founded in early 2024.

Rain in Alghero

Rob went out for an early morning walk but it was somewhat curtailed by some heavy showers. Still we managed to get to the old market, a walk along the Bastiones and the seafront.

After breakfast we returned to the market to buy some salmon and veg for tonight's homemade dinner.

We then took a stroll along Alghero's huge marina and walked along Lungomare Barcelona which is perfect for seeing the sights along the beachfront.

We stopped off at The magic bar for coffee and croissants and to taking in the views. Returning to the old town we stopped of for an ice cream before continuing our walk along the old city seawall.

In the evening we walked over to the Blue Sky rooftop bar which has tremendous, panoramic views of the old town, the marina and the hills in the distance . The dark clouds over the town and. Sea made the scene made even more dramatic.

Heading to Alghero

Leaving Sassari, we caught the train for the 40 minute journey to the town of Alghero.
Often called “Little Barcelona,” it features cobbled streets, Gothic architecture, and a vibrant harbour.

On a hot day, our first stop was Piazza Civica for a sandwich and a well earned beer.

In the early afternoon we went for a stroll along the seafront.

After a short siesta we walked into the old town for Apritivo, before having dinner.
To walk off our dinner we took a stroll along Bastioni Cristoforo Colombo as the sun started to set over Alghero.
